Engine 2 Diet

Created by world-class triathlete turned firefighter, Rip Esselstyn, the Engine2 Diet promotes a 28-day plant based diet to help lower cholesterol and significantly reduce the risk of disease. Using advice from his father, Dr. Caldwell B. Esselstyn, Rip knew that medical research has proven a plant-based, low fat diet could help to reverse the risk of heart disease and diabetes. The Engine2 Diet was proven effective as fellow firehouse members lowered their cholesterol levels, lost an average of 20lbs. and achieved overall improved health on the Engine2 Diet plan.

Foods to Increase:

  • Vegetables
  • Whole Grains
  • Fruit
  • Legumes
  • Seeds Nuts

Foods to reduce:

  • Meat
  • Dairy
  • Processed and refined foods
  • Added and extracted oils

Pros:

  • Plant-based diets has been shown to lower risks of heart disease and diabetes in many research studies
  • The lifestyle recommendations in the Engine2 Diet plan with regards to physical activity are easy exercises and not too advanced for diet beginners

Cons:

  • Author Rip Esselstyn makes a claim that dairy consumption is directly associated with Type 1 diabetes – which has not been clinically proven
  • Author notes that a plant based diet may affect calcium levels, but recommends various sources of plant foods to compensate for potential calcium losses
