The Truth About Calcium

by Teresa Valdez on May 22, 2013

Since we were children, we’ve been told to drink our milk, right? “It’s good for your bones”, you were told by parents, teachers and doctors alike. It continued as we got older, too. “You need your calcium to help prevent osteoporosis,” goes the conventional wisdom.

I won’t make an argument against the fact that calcium is, indeed, needed to help keep our bones strong. However, did you know that no matter how much calcium you consume, it won’t make much of a difference if you’re deficient another nutrient?

The truth is that Vitamin D is necessary for calcium absorption. Unfortunately, Vitamin D is not found much in our country’s food supply. Rather, Vitamin D is commonly synthesized by our bodies when exposed to sunlight.

To make sure you’re getting enough Vitamin D when you’re not in the sun, visit the supplements section of your local pharmacy and purchase a bottle of Vitamin D3, the most common form of Vitamin D. When selecting a bottle of Vitamin D, keep in mind that most people need at least 2,000 IU of D3 per day, and buy a quantity that’s appropriate for you.
