How To Get Rid of Your Muffin Top

by Teresa Valdez on May 8, 2013

Do you know what a muffin top is? Unfortunately, I’m not talking about the delicious part of a muffin that comes over the muffin wrapper. No, the muffin top I’m talking about – you know, the one where your excess skin or fat comes up and over your pants? – is not delightful at all.

As it turns out, unsightly “muffin tops” are not only unattractive, but dangerous. The larger your midsection, the higher your risk of developing diabetes and heart disease. And this not only applies to people that are overweight – extra fat accumulation around the mid-section also occurs in people of normal weight.

So what can one do to prevent both muffin tops, and the detrimental health effects they can have later on?

Eat enough protein

Muscle mass decreases as we get older, and since muscle mass helps burn fat, this decrease in muscle allows fat to accumulate faster and more easily. Protein is the building block for lean muscles, so you should shoot for consuming 20-30 grams of protein at each meal. Good sources of lean protein include white fish, boneless, skinless chicken breasts and egg whites.

Strength train

The phrase “strength training” sounds intimidating, but don’t worry – you don’t have to spend hours at the gym to strength train. If you shoot for at least two days per week where you concentrate on strength training, you’ll be well on your way to getting rid of your muffin top.

Interval train

Interval training is very beneficial to people who want to keep their weight in check. Interval training consists of alternating between high-intensity bursts of movement and a moderate pace. Shoot for 15 to 25 minutes 3 to 4 times a week to achieve the most dramatic benefits to both your figure and your health.
