Medication Therapy Management

The Benefits of Medication Therapy Management

by Teresa Valdez on May 1, 2013

One of the services I offer, in addition to health and wellness coaching, is medication therapy management, or MTM. The purpose of this blog entry is to shed some light on what MTM is, and why it might be beneficial to you.

What is MTM?

Simply put, MTM allows people who take medications not only to manage the medications they take, but also the underlying health problems. Having your health under proper control allows you to get your life under control, which ends up benefitting your health just as much as your medication!

Who benefits from MTM?

The short answer is that everybody who currently takes medications and/or supplements may benefit from MTM. Obviously, not everyone who takes medications needs help managing them, so allow me to explain in greater detail which type of person can get the most from MTM.

MTM is especially beneficial for patients that have multiple chronic conditions (diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, asthma, congestive heart failure, to name a few), take multiple medications, and have an annual medications cost of at least $2,000.

Why is MTM important to society?

Medication-related problems are a significant public health issue within the healthcare system. Incidence estimates suggest that more than 1.5 million preventable medication-related adverse events occur each year in the United States, accounting for an excess of $177 billion in terms of medication-related morbidity and mortality.

Since MTM services may contribute to medication error prevention, result in
improved reliability of healthcare delivery, and enable patients to take an active role in medication and healthcare self-management, they are important not only for individuals who require medications to maintain their health, but indeed to communities as a whole.
